What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture originated in China over 2000 years ago and gained more of a foothold in the West in the 1970’s. Today it is one of the most popular and trusted medical treatments around. Very fine sterile needles are inserted in specific point of the body to regulate the energy flow or ‘Qi’. All acupuncture points relate to energy channels in the body and are interconnected. The aim of acupuncture is to promote and maintain a free flow of Qi and achieve optimum health.

What is shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a form of bodywork where you remain fully clothed. It originated in Japan and it works along the same energy channels or meridians as acupuncture, making it a effective combination or a stand alone therapy. Shiatsu is deeply relaxing and rejuvenating.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture treats the root cause of the problem and resolves the symptoms in the process. A problem like headache can have different causes and different points would be used to resolve the underlying cause. Pain signifies vital energy is not flowing freely; it is blocking an area and it causes discomfort and pain. Qi can become disturbed or blocked because of illness or lifestyle. Acupuncture is all about stimulating free flow of Qi. There is excellent scientific evidence to show that acupuncture is effective.

Is it safe?

Acupuncture is one of the safest treatments you could have. Needles are sterile and disposed of safely after use. Acupuncture is not known to have any side effects. Acupuncturists adhere to the highest standard of hygiene as prescribed by the professional governing bodies.

What does acupuncture feel like?

Acupuncture needles are very fine and bendable and nothing like injection needles. Insertion of a needles can feel like a little scratch or more likely you may not feel it at all. Once the needles are in place you may experience a heavy sensation or tingling. It is not uncommon for people to feel sensations in other parts of the body because the energy is stimulated and affects the rest of your body. For example a needle in your arm could make you feel you can breathe more deeply, or a needle in your lower leg can affect your digestion and make your tummy rumble. All good signs it is working.
